Timeline of Mormon Presence in Far West

1836
June 29th- Petition drawn up by Non-Mormon citizens of Clay County requesting Mormons leave the County.
August 8th- Far West Town Site Chosen by W.W. Phelps and John Whitmer.
Fall- Mormons begin settling in Far West and surrounding areas. Initial land pries were as little as $1.25/acre.
December 26th- Caldwell County officially formed specifically for settlement by Mormons.

1837
June- Due to increased demand, land prices reach $10/acre.
November- Joseph Smith visits Far West and expands the town site to 2 sq miles and city blocks to 4 acres each.

1838
March- Joseph Smith and his family arrive in Far West.
April- Joseph Smith receives revelation indicating that the Mormon Saints should gather at Far West. (Doctrine and Covenants 118:17-18)
June- Large wagon groups begin to arrive. Populations later peaks at an estimated 5,000.
July 4th- Foundation aid for Far West Temple
August 6th- In Gallatin, Daviess County- Mormons not allowed to vote in election for state legislature. Led to fight. Tensions rose.
August/September- Vigilante groups begin harassing Mormons in Daviess County and outlying areas.
Mid September-
Vigilante Groups begin harassing Mormons in Daviess County and outlying areas.
October 2nd- 30 Mormons, 150 vigilantes exchange fire. No serious injuries.
October 11th- DeWitt Mormons leave for Far West
Mid October- Mobs return to Daviess County, Burn Mormon Homes in Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Mormons retaliate and are accused of burning Gallatin/Millport.
October 25th- Battle of Crooked River (12 Miles south of Far West). 3 Mormons killed.
October 27th- Governor Boggs issues "Extermination Order"
October 30th- Attack on Haun's Mill, 17 Mormon men and boys killed. Home and property destroyed.
October 30th- Siege at Far West begins, State Militia arrives.
October 31st- Joseph Smith and four others taken as prisoners. Taken to Independence, then Richmond, and eventually to Liberty Jail.
November 1st- Mormons surrender, Homes/Property burned and plundered. The Saint are tormented and abused.
1839

Mid February to April 20th- Mormon Exodus from Missouri to Quincy, IL. They later settled in Nauvoo, Illinois.
Mid April- Joseph Smith and other escape.  They head to Illinois and join rest of the Saints.
April 25th- 6 Apostles returned secretly to Far West, Placed Temple cornerstone and left for missions.
