Far West Important Events:
Local county government officials were elected adn appointed after Far West became the County seat in spring of 1837,  Govner Lilburn W. Boggs appointed William W. Phelps as a justice of the county court.  William W. Phelps was alos the first postmaster in Far West.  The residents of Caldwell County formed their own military regiment in accordance with the laws of Missouri.  It was composed entirely of Latter-day Saints and was mustered into service early in the summer of 1837. Lyman Wight was elected colonel in command of the Caldwell County regiment.  When Lyman moved to Daviess County, George W. Hinkle was chosen to replace him as colonel of the Caldwell miilitia.  All officers were commissioned by Governor Boggs (Gentry, Leland :A History of the Latter-day Saints in Northern Missouri from 1836-1837")

There were 7 revelations received by Joseph Smith in Far West.
March 1838-D&C 113- Insights are given on the Book of Isaiah
April 1838- D&C 114-David W. Patten is called on a mission the next spring.
April 1838-D&C 115- The full name of the Church is given, the city of Far West is on holy ground, the saints are commanded to build a house of the Lord.
July 1838- D&C 117-Instructions are given to the Lord's servants
July 1838- D&C 118- The Twelve Apostles are to depart from the temple site on Apr. 26, 1839
July 1838- D&C 119- The Lord's law of tithing is instituted
July 1838- D&C 120- Instructions are given on the disposition of tithed properties.

Joseph Smith arrived in Far West on March 14, 1838.  With Joseph, were Brigham Young, Samuel H. Smith, Levi Richards, Daniel S. Miles, and Sidney Rigdon. Joseph hoped for peace here in Far West, he said "Heaven smiles upon the Saints in Caldwell" ( "History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"  3:11)

As hostilities became more vicious, the Saints in ourlying settlements were urged to gather in Far West (October 1838) They would there have a larger population and militia to defend them. 
Brigham Young became the leader of the Church in Missouri while the Prophet Joseph was in prison. Brigham encouraged the Saints to assist each other as they prepared to move.
